While practice is important, there are a few things you need to know in order to control your skateboard so it does the tricks you want.

The Body Position

This tip is particularly helpful for heelflips.

You might be leaning over your board if you are trying to learn how to heelflip . You can try again. This time, stand tall and confident and then pop.

Make sure you jump straight up when you do your trick. So your skateboard will flip under your feet, not behind. Now all you have to do is grab the board and land it. Then, roll away like a boss!

When you are out skating, correct your posture and stand tall. This will help you feel more confident, relaxed, and you’ll be able to land more tricks.

Skateboards are best kept clean

The secret to 360 flipping is this tip.

Your board will often go out of control when you first try a couple. This is common with beginners who learn tre flips (aka. 360 flips). You might not be scooping your board properly when you pop the trick. To ensure that your board flips underneath your feet, scoop your tail.

This is done by placing your back foot into the back corner of your skateboard. Next, you will lightly grip your tail. As you perform the trick, lift your tail with your backfoot and flick your board with your front foot. Your front foot is also helpful in turning the board 360°, but the majority of the work is done with your back foot.

You can also use the scoop to do a variety of tricks like hardflips and frontside flips as well as 360 shuvits. You’ll learn how to properly scoop your skateboard and be able do more tricks on it!

Trucks that are tight

This section is for skateboarders who do a lot of flip tricks.

You might consider tightening your trucks if you are interested in learning how to do flip tricks. Tighter trucks are not only more stable and controllable, but they also make it easier to flip and spin your skateboard. This will help you perform more flip tricks.

However, if you are a skateboarder who prefers to do transitions and cruises, you will probably want to ride your trucks loose.

Use your Shoulders

Using your shoulders is a key tip for frontside 180 kickflips.

To perform a frontside turn, you should have your shoulders turned slightly in this direction. This will make it easier to do the full 180. To see the full flip trick tip from Andrew Reynolds, click here.

For other tricks like the heelflip and kickflip, your shoulders should be parallel to your skateboard. Next, perform your tricks looking directly over your shoulder. By keeping your shoulders straight, you can help keep your board from spinning as you land.

Your feet could be causing your boards to continue turning if they don’t.

Foot Positions

As you can see in the video, there are specific foot positions for different tricks on a skateboard.

You can flip your board and/or spin it however you like by knowing where to place the pressure. You’ll see how professional skaters position their feet to perform each trick.

When you do tricks that don’t require you to turn your skateboard, ensure your back foot presses on the middle of your tail. Your skateboard could turn in mid-air if you press down too hard on the side when you pop. You can try a different foot position until your board is straight.
